Olympic Wrap Up

The 2010 Winter Olympics finally graced us with their presence after years of waiting with anticipation.  It definitely was worth the wait….but it all happened so quickly.  Over the 3.5 weeks our clients varied – from media to corporate groups, athletes to families, all traveling to Whistler and Vancouver to be a part of the Games.

Highlights for us included:

  • Skiing with  Manny Osborne Paradis
  • Launching our ski with an Olympian experience with Four Seasons Resort Whistler
  • TV broadcasts of our ‘Ski with an Olympian’ program with Cary Mullen and Robbie Dixon
  • Canadian Gold Hockey Game
  • Hosting Norwegian Gold Medal Parties
  • Introducing fans to Olympians Anne-marie Lefrancois and Erik Schlopy at the Four Seasons
  • Private Chefs and our Olympic crew
  • Final medal ceremony party – Usher!
  • Hanging out at the Canadian House
  • Vancouver – the 24 hour party city
  • The Closing ceremony

The Games brought the world to Canada.  It’s crazy to think how much happened in such a short amount of time. As my Sochi 2014 snow-globe, given out at the final ceremonies, sits patiently on my desk… I can’t help but wonder what the Sochi Olympic will be like!

Case Study: Client Entertaining on the Ski Slopes

I hope you’re enjoying the 2010 Winter Olympics Games here in Whistler as much as we are.  With less than one week to go (I can’t believe it’s gone by so fast), our team has been going non-stop with fulfilling client programs and making last minute changes all while trying to take in as much of this incredible experience as possible.  Here’s a example of one of our most recent requests.

Client:

Scotia Capital represents the global corporate and investment banking, and capital markets businesses of the Scotiabank Group, providing full service coverage in Canada and servicing selected niche markets globally.

Scenario:

Best of Both Golf & Ski was approached (through a word of mouth referral) by an executive of Scotia Capital with an opportunity to create a memorable experience for 10 VIP clients during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.  The request was made 5 days prior to the execution date.  This was a fair challenge considering we were hosting over 100 clients during the Games.  We brought our team together and worked to meet our clients needs and expectations.

Solution:

The VIP group was greeted at their hotel in Vancouver and whisked away by private van to the resort of Whistler.   Upon arrival the group was greeted by a Best of Both representative and Jeff Hume, one of our pro athletes (Canadian Alpine Ski Team alumni).  Jeff  took part of the group for a guided ski day around Whistler and Blackcomb, stopping mid day for a mountain top gourmet lunch on the patio.  The other group experienced the excitement of the Biathlon event.

Result:

Scotia Capital was able to show they valued their clients business by providing them with a very memorable day filled with a bit of luxury, a touch of prestige and some adventure.

Case Study: Executive Retreat

The Client:

A group of 20 successful executives that gather together every year for their annual ‘Boys Ski Weekend’ (BSW).

The Scenario:
BSW came to Best of Both with an extensive checklist. Pioneers in “boys ski weekend’s away” they had clear expectations and required a high level of service. They needed a company that had inside local knowledge, that could offer creative suggestions and ensure they received VIP treatment through the entirety of their stay.  A personalized itinerary combining adventure, luxury and prestige would guarantee this trip succeeded the others. Ranging from intermediate to expert skiers, they wanted to ski their best with our best and leave Whistler with memories that would last a lifetime.

The Solution:

Create a weekend that was exciting, unique and packed full of action and adventure to exceed any expectations.  BSW flew in for their three day weekend and annual retreat with smiles and ease, welcomed by the snowy mountains of Whistler.  Best of Both’s job was to look after the details while ‘the boys’ job was to relax and enjoy their private ski in/out condo’s with personal chef, indoor swimming pool, outdoor jacuzzi and breathtaking views. Day 1 set the tone; a day of guided skiing with World Cup champions and Olympians followed by private masseuses and ending with a gourmet dinner and fine wine from around the world.  The rest of the weekend was full of powder chasing and heli-sking, private lunches and personal masseuse’s, and even a mountaintop fondue dinner followed by VIP club entry.  The weekend ended with an unforgettable sushi feast, the spectacular Fire & Ice show and a farewell after party not to be missed.

The Result:

Choosing Best of Both to organize BSW 2010 resulted in just the right mix of adventure, prestige and luxury to impress and succeed their group’s expectations.  The addition of Best of Both’s celebrity ski pros raised the profile of the weekend to distinguish it from previous years. The personalized and more private itinerary provided the level of service that BSW required to guarantee a hassle free weekend of world-class skiing, full of fun and quality time with friends.

“ The Olympic Edition was a great success and thoroughly enjoyable.  Your hospitality and organizational accomplishments were unsurpassed and set an impossible bar for the next BSW.   Bravo!  Thank you.” – S. Mohammadion

Happy Holidays

As we wrap up 2009, put away the golf clubs, dig out the skis and prepare for an unforgettable winter, I am left wondering where did the year go?  As it is the season of giving, here is our  ’Highlights of 2009′ photo album.  See if you can find yourself.

For Best of Both Golf & Ski, we kicked off in Kitzbuhel at the Hahnenkamm World Cup and began 2009 with 80,000 other screaming fans! Whistler winter held events such as heli-skiing, the new Peak 2 Peak gondola, the ACA/WMSC charity event with celebrity pros & exclusive access to the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival.

April through October brought great conditions for golf in all of our destinations. We experienced The Masters in April, Whistler corporate golf days & retreats in June and July and our Ireland and Bandon Dunes golf getaways led by celebrity golf pro Bryn Parry in September and November.

A special thank you to our celebrity pros for their involvement in the following charity events we supported: Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports Challenge Cup, Endeavor Gala, Vancouver Board of Trade’s Governors Banquet & Six Degrees of Separation for BC Special Olympics.

Finally snow is falling in Whistler, after the resort’s snowiest November ever and the 2010 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Games are just around the corner.  We look forward to treating almost 100 people to an unforgettable experience.

On behalf of the team at Best of Both Golf & Ski and our pros that share their passion to create your adventures, we wish you happy holidays and a safe and prosperous new year.

Regards and we look forward to seeing you soon,
Sincerely,
Dana Williams

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort Keeps Getting Better

You know how sometimes you can get bored by going back to the same place again and again?  Well, luckily for me (and you) it’s highly unlikely this will happen at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.  Located on the Oregon Coast (USA), this spectacular golf course works tirelessly to improve their guests overall experience.  Whether it’s making small changes to their food menus to adding an entire 18-hole Scottish links style golf course, their focus on creating a golfer’s dream does not go unnoticed.

Best of Both celebrity golf pro, Bryn Parry, along with seven other passionate golfers recently returned from their four day trip to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.  You may be asking ‘what’s it like to golf on the Oregon Coast in November?’  Other than the first 9-holes of this golf trip (which were quite ‘challenging’ due to the rain and wind), the group was treated to sunshine with cloudy periods and the occasional gust of wind.  In fact, the weather has cooperated the majority of time we have entertained guests at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Highlights received in the guest feedback form included:

“Having a former PGA Tour player like Bryn along for the trip made it this trip truly unique.  He shared some great golfing advice both on the driving range and on course which helped improve my game.”

“Sure the golf was amazing but  how about the Napa Valley wine Spencer (Hoops, Hoopla & Liparita) and Mitch (CE2V & M Coz of Cosentino Winery) shared with us all.  A special thanks to both of them for their generosity.”

Interested in joining a Best of Both celebrity pro in Bandon Dunes?  As the title of this ‘blog’ eludes, the resort will be adding a fourth course to their roster of world-class courses called Old MacDonald.  With only 10 holes allowed play this fall, the entire 18 holes will be open for play in the summer of 2010.  You’re invited to join in for a truly memorable golf trip.

If you’re wondering what’s included in Best of Both’s celebrity guided Bandon Dunes Golf Trip then you can find it here:  http://www.bestofboth.ca/content/trips/13/itinerary.php.

See you in Bandon!

Summer Schedule of a World Cup Ski Racer – Michael Janyk

About Pro Tips Newsletter:

Our Pro Tips Newsletter is sent out quarterly and strives to give skiers and/or golfers an inside perspective of the best skiers and golfers in the business, Best of Both celebrity pros.  This issue shares details of an interview with Michael Janyk, 2009 World Champion Bronze medalists in slalom.

My Summer – Michael Janyk

“We’ve focused a lot on fitness training this summer.  It started with three weeks in May in Calgary.  Soon after I was fortunate enough to come back to Whistler where I have spent the majority of my time ,” explains Michael Janyk, Canadian Alpine Ski Team member, 2009 Slalom World Champion Bronze Medalist, and Whistler local.  ” It’s so nice to be  able to sleep in my own bed, especially with the Olympics coming here in just under four months.  Another fitness camp we did was a hockey camp in Quebec lead by Felix Potvin.”
For those of you who don’t know Felix Potvin, he was one of the National Hockey Leagues best goalies throughout the mid 90′s.  “The whole team had a great session there and the workout was awesome.  Training with the Canadian Junior hockey players was lots of fun and a really good workout,” says Janyk.

As for summer skiing, Michael and his teammates spent a total of five weeks on snow in New Zealand.  This consisted of a three week and two week camp split by two weeks of rest and recovery back home in Canada.  “Everyone was skiing really well.  It’s good to know  that we can compete against each other and know we are skiing at the best level in the  world.”  This, evident by the technical results Canadian ski racers produced last winter on the World Cup Tour.

Janyk notes that a strong work ethic has been injected back into the team by head coach Dusan Grasic, a direct correlation to the improved performance within the team. “Grasic understands what it takes to win World Cups; it’s the person who is most aggressive and makes the least amount of mistakes.  In order to do this we need to work really hard and be in the best possible physical shape.”

As fitness training was a main focus for Michael, in his preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and this interview, I asked him to share more details of this type of training.

“The beginning of the summer was more endurance based.  I spent more time on the bike and running – anywhere between two to two and a half hours at a time at a low intensity.  I really enjoy cycling but unfortunately it’s not the best for my back.  All these years of ski racing has taken a toll on some parts of my body; for me it’s mainly my back.  But I have a good understanding of what irritates it and what exercises I need to do to keep it in good
shape.  In the gym I lifted lighter weights with more reps and more rest between sets.  My workouts then shifted more towards power and quickness.  In the gym this was less reps and more weight while running and biking workouts were more focused on intervals between 45 to 65 seconds.  This was to mimic the time of a typical World Cup slalom
race so my body is trained to perform at it’s best over that duration.”

My final question to Michael, considering he was born and raised in Whistler, host of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, was ‘What are you goals for this winter?’  He replied “I understand it’s an Olympic year and that they will be on my home hill.  Last year I wanted to end the season in the top 30 so I would have a good starting position at the beginning of this season. I’m currently ranked 15th which is where I wanted to be.  I know that if I ski well and consistent that I can be on the podium.  I focus on the process of each run (how to ski fast) with the confidence that the results will follow.  Obviously my dream goal is to win the gold medal in slalom at the Olympics.”.

Do you want to watch Michael go for gold in Whistler this February?  Contact us at  info@besto%oth.ca.  We will soon launch a VIP program to our current client base that  will give them the opportunity to experience the Olympics and cheer on Michael and their favorite ski racers.  Additional spots will be available for those who want to become Best of Both clients.

Thank You

Thank you to Michael for sharing his summer fitness and ski
training program.  We look forward to keeping track of his
results in the upcoming months and cheering him on in Whistler
in February.
