Keys to the Hahnenkamm According to Klammer

As we prepare for our 2012 Hahnenkamm trip, here’s a good article that gives you a bit of introspective of the challenge each racers is about to embark one:

By Doug Lewis, Universal Sports

Most downhill races are held on trails that are fun to ski. Long after the gates and nets have been taken down, the trails of World Cup’s most famous speed tracks like Birds of Prey, Bormio, Whistler and Garmisch are wide open, filled with exciting terrain and a blast to ski.

Not so at Kitzbuehel. The Hannenkahm course drops, criss-crosses, dives, traverses and cuts a unique path from the top of the Austrian alps all the way to the city center almost 3000 feet below. It’s a mish-mash of trails and farmer’s fields connected together once a year for the biggest day in Alpine racing. No one would ever say, “Hey let’s go free-ski the DH trail at Kitz.” It would not be fun.

It’s fitting then, that this patchwork of ugly terrain becomes the most legendary two minutes of skiing on the planet.

Let’s breakdown the keys to Kitzbuehel with the help of four-time Hannenkahm winner Franz Klammer.

Klammer: “The first thing that came to my mind – no way racers can ski this. I was sh*tting my pants. The speeds are like crazy. But, then I thought, this is THE race to win if you are a downhiller. So I made a decision to attack.” Continue reading

The Best Way to End 2011

There are few things in life that make my body tingle and cover it with goosebumps just by closing my eyes and thinking about it.  Helicopter skiing is one of them.  Today, myself and Best of Both pro athlete skier and Whistler local, Anastasia Skryabina, were fortunate to spend the last day of 2011 heliskiing the spectacular mountains surrounding Whistler with one of our VIP clients. How Long will the US Dominate World Cup Ski Racing?

Below is an interesting article on the United States Ski Team’s strong performance in the World Cup within the last few years.  I’m not surprised of this to a great degree because I believe the trend is the nature of athletic performance.  For example, in five years from now it’s quite possible the Austrian’s could be back to dominating the World Cup as they were five years ago. Like anything, there needs to be a sense of urgency for change to take place.  The Austrian’s didn’t feel a sense of urgency when they were dominating…..it was the US that felt this.  And now they are on top.  I believe that the US’s urgency to succeeed will dwindle (it’s natural when you’re ar the top) while their competitor’s disappointing results will create the same urgency the US had five years ago.  This will result in new champions.  That’s the nature of competitive sport.

Back at the Birds of Prey World Cup Races

It was a special feeling to be back in Beaver Creek for the Birds of Prey World Cup races.  The last time I was at here was in December 1997.  At that time though I was on the other side of the fence as a racer; it was my first World Cup ski race and I remember it like it was just yesterday.  I have vivid memories of strolling around the start hut, butterflies dancing in my belly, trying to stay focused on my pre-race routine while world cup legends the likes of Hermann Maier and Lasse Kjus warmed-up right next to me.  One of the best parts of this years race was an even higher level of energy and excitement compared to Beaver Creek’s inaugural World Cup in 1997. 15. Soak your gloves and store them in the freezer after every use.

14. Fasten a small, wide rubber band around the top half of your head before  you go to bed each night.

13. If you wear glasses, begin wearing them with glue smeared on the lenses.

12. Throw away a hundred dollar bill – now.
