2009 Hahnenkamm Week Will Be Tough to Forget

As concise as possible, this is how I can describe this year’s trip to Kitzbuhel: Amazing snow, friendlypeople, great weather, apres ski, lunches in the mountains, one bad crash (D Albrecht), lots of laughs, European culture, gluehwein, the famous Londoner pub…and more.   The 2008 Hahnenkamm trip ended with a saying: “What happens in Kitzbuhel stays in Kitzbuhel!”  Fortunately, I don’t have to follow such strict guidelines after this years trip.

There were five groups who joined Best of Both at this years races.  Some slept in a bit while recovering from jet lag while others were up at the crack of dawn and chumping at the bit to go skiing.  One thing was for sure; everybody came together as a group in the grand-stands to cheer on their favorite racer(s) and mix it up with the crazed Austrian ski racing fans during the races.  You wouldn’t believe how a few ounces….ok, glasses, of Gluehwein, some mini Milka chocolate bars, and a few euro-sandwiches taste after a morning of hard skiing.

I owe a few thank you’s:  First, to Luke Sauder.  A Canadian Ski team alumni and 8-time Hahnenkamm competitor, Luke’s entertaining explanations and love for skiing made the trip much more memorable. Second, to our guests from Vancouver, Toronto, Geneva, Hong Kong, Halifax, San Francisco, and Whistler.  And finally, to the Canadian Ski Team, along with Swiss ski racing star/legend, Didier Cuche, for an entertaining night at the Londoner.  You are definitely keeping the tradition alive.

Let me change my opening line to “What happens at the Londoner stays in the Londoner!”  See you in 2010.
